Invitation Terms
Invitation - the formal request for the presence of guests at your wedding. It includes all the details of your wedding.
Save the Date Cards - these cards are sent out 6 months to 1 year before your wedding to announce the date and location of the wedding. They are particularly useful when you are inviting out of town guests or are having a destination wedding which involves guests planning ahead for travel arrangements and time off work.
Announcement - cards that announce your wedding either ahead of time or afterwards to let family and friends know you have gotten married. These are popular with elopements and couples having small ceremonies, they would send announcements to those who could not be invited.
Enclosure or Insert Card - another name for reception, RSVP, accommodation, and direction cards. They are typically smaller than the invitation.
Reception Card - the formal request to invite guests to your reception.
RSVP Card - a card in which you are asking your guests if they will be attending your wedding or not. Many RSVP cards also include a meal choice if applicable and the number of guests attending the wedding. The couple should always pre-stamp these cards.
Informal Card - usually has the couples names on the front of the card or their monogram, and is either printed inside or is left blank for a personal message.
Direction Card - provides your guests with exact directions to your wedding and sometimes are more helpful if they include a map.
Accommodation Card - includes options of hotels for your guests to stay at while in town for your wedding. Sometimes couples are able to block off a number of rooms at a discounted rate, this information would be included on the card.
Ceremony Program - the order of events and outline of your ceremony. Programs also usually acknowledge your wedding attendants.
Escort Card - indicates to your guests which table they should be seated at.
Placecard - indicates to your guests which place setting they should be seated at.
Calligraphy - a writing technique by a calligrapher using a special pen and ink. There are many different styles of calligraphy and it is usually used for formal weddings.
